Environmental Restoration of Sacred Water Bodies
1. Introduction
The sacred geography of Braj Bhoomi, is dotted with ancient water bodies that
were once pristine and ecologically rich. Over time, due to urbanization, pollution,
and neglect, these water bodies had deteriorated. Shri Chaitanya Health and Care
Trust has taken a leading role in rejuvenating these sites—not just as
environmental projects but as spiritual and cultural restorations that reconnect
people with their sacred heritage.
The Trust uses eco-engineering methods combining indigenous knowledge with
modern environmental science to rejuvenate kunds (water bodies) through Soil
Scape Filtration, Microbial Bioremediation, Desilting and Deepening and Source
Diversion and Waste Management
2. Major Kunds Restored
Priya Kund (Barsana): The chemical and biological properties of the water
such as COD, BOD, TDS, Nitrate, Sulphate have significantly reduced
bringing the water quality from Class C to Class B as per Central Pollution
Control Board (CPCB). The revival drew back migratory birds and increased
pilgrim footfall. Eco walkways and benches were added.
Prem Sarovar (Govardhan): Partnered with Indian Oil Corporation. Installed
20 SSFs and 20 SMFUs (Skid Mounted Filtration Units). Applied 459 kg of
microbial agents and cleared encroachments. The Ras Mandap (heritage
pavilion) was restored.
Other Kunds: Restoration of Krishna Kund, Jal Vihar Kund, Pawan Sarovar,
Vivhal Kund, and Vrishabhanu Kund will be taken up next.
3. Community Involvement
Local youth are trained as “Kund Mitras” to maintain cleanliness, educate pilgrims,
and monitor water quality.Volunteer Engagement: Residents, school groups, and
tourists participate in cleanliness drives and awareness walks.
4. Infrastructure and Eco-Zoning
Fencing and security around kund perimeters prevent illegal dumping and
encroachments. Paths, signage, viewing decks, and shaded seating have been
created to enhance public access and engagement.
5. Impact and Replication
Environmental: Significant improvement in biodiversity, water quality, and
groundwater recharge.
Cultural and Spiritual: Revived sacred spaces support religious tourism and
community pride.
Government Recognition: The model has received support from IOCL, UP
Braj Teerth Vikas Parishad, and other stakeholders.
